The Metroidvania is by far essentially the most esoterically named style of video video games. A portmanteau of Metroid and Castlevania, it just about boils right down to: non-linear platform video games with ability-gated exploration. Or, you already know, you discover till you attain some extent that requires a ability you’ve but to select up.
